Gracewing, together with the various publishers that we distribute in Europe, are marking the Year for Priests with a number of titles. The most ambitious of these will be a Gracewing publication: The Catholic Priest, Image of Christ (£40.00 hardback)
.
The editor of The Catholic Priest, Image of Christ, Steen Heidemann presents 560 images of the priesthood, from masterpieces of art across fifteen centuries, which vividly illustrate the vocation, call to sanctity, apostolic work, spirituality and liturgical activity of priests. Accompanying the illustrations are profound expositions of the priestly life from major figures of the Church: His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estévez, Archbishop Raymond Burke, Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith, Bishop Basile Mvé Engone, Bishop John Basil Meeking, Bishop Juan Rodolfo Laise; the Abbots of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault, Notre-Dame de Randol, Notre-Dame de Triors, Sainte-Madeleine du Barroux, Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse; a range of other distinguished priests including Fathers of the Oratory and of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. The book also explores the question of what art is worthy to be used in the Church (the illustrations include many paintings and stained glass designs from the 21st century), and provides a gazetteer of significant contemporary artists working for the Church today.
This is a book to be treasured, to inform the Catholic family, to inspire vocations and to help to reaffirm priests in their mission.
From Source Books we have an excellent and inexp
ensive edition of the Eucharistic Meditations of the Curé d'Ars, St Jean Vianney, (£6.99) which is a seminal work for the Year.
Another spiritual classic is Gracewing's own edition of Blessed Dom Columba Marmion's Christ, the Ideal of the Priest (£17.99) which is joined by a new edition of his masterwork Christ in His Mysteries (£17.99) published February 2010 both books are newly translated by Alan Bancroft, as was also Blessed Columba's Christ, the Life of the Soul (£17.99).
For the laity, Our Sunday Visitor has produced a useful Bible Study Guide for Catholics Sharing Christ's Priesthood by Mike Aquilina (£6.99) which can help revitalize any small group study, parish community or individual. Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York now has his classic work Priests for the Third Millennium reissued in a special paperback edition (£16.99) for the Year for Priests a former Rector of the North American College in Rome, Archbishop Dolan's pastoral, practical, thoroughly Catholic book will renew the joy of being Catholic in the heart of seminarians, priests, and the people they serve. Men of Brave Heart: The Virtue of Courage in the Priestly Life (£15.99) by Archbishop José H. Gomez is a celebration of the priestly life a perfect inspiration for any priest or seminarian, as well as anyone who wants to better understand the special calling of their priest.

A wonderful resource for any priest is The Mundelein Psalter (£35.00) edited by Douglas Martis the first complete one-volume edition containing the approved English-language texts of the Liturgy of the Hours with psalms that are pointed for the chanting of the Divine Office. The music consists of simple yet beautiful Gregorian-based modes composed for this Psalter

(£17.99) edited by Fr Uwe Michael Lang is an important collection of essays about the Catholic Liturgical tradition from leading international academics like Eamon Duffy, Laurence Paul Hemming, Alcuin Reid and Sheridan Gilley and of course Uwe Michael Lang himself. This December will also see publication of a new edition of Hugh Ross Williamson's wonderful exposition of the Roman Rite The Great Prayer (£9.99) which at a time when there is renewed interest in the Extraordinary Rite provides a superb commentary for priest and people alike to deepen their devotional understanding of the Mass published with a new
Introduction by Bishop Alan Hopes. And of course, Dominus Est It is the Lord! (£5.99), the little book that made such an impact when first published in Italian by Vatican Press, now in its English edition continues to inspire a new generation to worthy reception of the Sacrament. Another very welcome resource coming in April 2010 will be the first English translation of Fr Joseph de Sainte-Marie OCD's The Holy Eucharist The World's Salvation: Studies on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, its Celebration and its Concelebration (£ 20.00).
